Lifeguard Training Information

SwimSafe believes that preventing an accident and saving a life is worth the hours of training and dedication essential to becoming a competent lifeguardLifeguards have a serious responsibility to prevent accidents and handle emergencies properly. It is imperative that lifeguards are physically trained, mentally alert, and have the maturity to safely guard an aquatic area.

SwimSafe offers free StarGuard ELITE Certifications to all employees, this certification is renewed yearly. We also accept current American Red Cross and YMCA certifications. If you have a questions on whether your current certification is accepted please email Ellie.

Blended Learning

All SwimSafe Lifeguard classes are a blended learning format. This means that a portion of the training is completed online prior to your scheduled class. This training can be accessed at swimsafe.lifeguardportal.com after you have been invited to it for the season. Please see FAQ’s for common troubleshooting!

Swimming Requirements

All lifeguard candidates must be able to complete these pre-screening requirements in order to achieve their certification

  • Swim 100 continuous yards
  • Tread water for 2 minutes without using your hands
  • Retrieve a 10lb rubber brick from the deepest part of the pool

Lifeguard Uniform information

Required Uniform Items

  • Whistle & SwimSafe Lanyard
  • SwimSafe Uniform Shirt
  • Hip Pack
  • Ventilation Mask
  • RED Lifeguard Suit (must be purchased independently)

All new lifeguards are entitled to receive the first 4 uniform items listed above, these will be distributed during lifeguard training.

Returning lifeguards will be given the opportunity to purchase replacement items when registering for lifeguard training.

All Lifeguards need to wear a RED Guard suit that looks professional and is appropriate. Some facilities require females to wear a one-piece suit so check the requirements of your pool before purchasing.   

If at any point you need a replacement item please make all uniform purchases through our uniform store. You will have the option to pay for shipping or pick up your order at the Loveland office. If you are a new lifeguard and already have an accepted certification, or are choosing to obtain an outside certification, you will receive directions on how to get your uniform after submitting a copy of your current certification to Ellie.
